Tending the soil

A school with a mandate to serve children from economically disadvantaged communities came to the realization that a focus on ‘academic success’ alone was hindering its capacity to provide the best education possible for its students. They had observed over the years that the emotional state of students had a huge influence on their capacity to perform well. And the same could be said for teachers and staff. So they shifted their focus and made ‘happiness’ their biggest priority- not just for students, but for teachers, staff, and parents as well. They knew that happiness wouldn’t come from material rewards, but from feeling a deep sense of belonging and community. And so they brought a community-building lens into every aspect of running the school, asking themselves: “To what extent do we feel like a community?” and “How can we deepen the experience of community where it already exists?”
